Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
This book was described as one of the best Young Adult books released in 2020, so when I saw it at the library it was a must-get. After realizing it was a retelling of the classic Arthurian tales, I sat down to read right away. And I was not disappointed.
“Don’t make your life about the loss. Make it about the love.”
― Tracy Deonn, Legendborn
Tracy Deonn writes about sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews, whose mom dies in a car accident. To escape the painful memories of her hometown Bree goes to college by way of a high school residential program. There she gets caught up in the Legendborn society, who claim to be King Arthur’s and his knight’s descendants. After realizing there might be more to her mother’s death, Bree has a choice to make. How deep will she dig to find the truth?
This book is beautifully written. The way Deonn constructs her sentences, you get to see inside Bree’s mind. I fell in love with all of the characters and came close to gasping when the plot twist came. She also does an amazing job of showing grief and how its effects are different for everyone. Once I found out that Bree is based on Deonn’s life journey, let’s just say the tears multiplied. The theme of learning to remember with love and not focus on the loss is an important one. Additionally, more books need to be written and read, that tell Black History and show how horrible and unfair racism is. Our nation will never change unless people are educated, and books like this are a start.
Some of the characters are kind of stereotypical but lovable nonetheless. Besides that, I have no other complaints!
I cannot wait for the next book in the Legendborn series!!
